Shutdown Menu: click on thr cogwheel icon to close the computer down, or to hibernate, suspend or alter power settings. Select shutdown to reboot the computer.
Sound menu: control the volume, alter the input and output devices and play music from this icon.
Connections: choose and authenticate to wifi connections from here. You can choose between wifi and wired if you on a network.
Words
The Dash provides a dynamic search of your applications and files. You can find applications by browsing categories. If you know the name of an application you can start it by typing the name into the search box.
Indicator Menus control commonly used functions and display the state of your Internet connection and power.
GUI
We have graphical user interfaces, and a metaphor (the ‘desktop’) to help us use computers. But then we write huge manuals and invent words to describe what the icons mean!
What we need to do is to have a way of describing actions and, as Norman suggests show how to move from one action to another to achieve a goal.
I had learned already never to empty the well of my writing, but always stop...
